Times’ve changed. People still go with the “holy trinity” crap but there’s no holy trinity now.
Entrepreneurial watchmaking started to took over the market because things are much easier than they were 100 years ago.
I can tell you at least 10 brands that create truly insane pieces compared to so-called holy trinity. Greubel Forsey, F.P. Journe, Roger Smith, Philippe Dufour, Laurent Ferrier, A.Lange & Söhne, Grönefeld, Romain Gauthier, Voutilainen etc.. Believe me, there are no huge differences between all these brands’ execution and finishing. I’m not talking about design because it’s highly subjective.
Luxury is not only expensive but also scarce and exclusive. Producing 50k watches per year, takes away the exclusivity and discreetness. The brands I wrote up there, produces 1000 watches at most (excluding Lange) and that is true exclusivity and luxury.
Haute horlogerie now is too broad to be defined with three brands.
Did you see a more beautifully finished and extremely complicated movement like this one here? A.Lange & Söhne Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon
F.P. Journe Grande et Petite Sonnerie. There are at most 30 people on the planet who can assemble and create a Sonnerie watch. For years, watch industry offered no innovation at all; continued to use base movements just applying different finishing on them.
Luckily, today we have “independent threats” and they have to innovate. This piece here, features an innovation to a more than 150 years of technology. Finally.
For a time only watch, there’s no better finished movement. Philippe Dufour Simplicity. Just look at the sharp edges and immaculate craftsmanship. I mean, Laurent Ferrier, Lange, probably Vacheron as well applies a similar level of finishing but the work on this, creating the edges is just insane.
I can write 5 pages here; but the main idea is, watchmaking today can not be limited with 3 brands or watches. Each and every one of the brands offer similar level craftsmanship (some obviously higher) and innovation. What you hear as holy trinity today is nothing but a marketing gimmick. Those days are gone in the eyes of true connoiseurs.
